A message from the State Fire Marshal’s Office
Thanksgiving is the #1 day for home fires—There are more home fires on Thanksgiving Day then any other day in the year. Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday, but the day can be ruined by a cooking or candle fire, a burn injury or a carbon monoxide incident. Every home should have working smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms.
Thanksgiving is the top day for cooking fires—Cooking is the leading cause of fires in the home and the leading cause of fire injuries, so it is not surprising that 87 percent of Thanksgiving Day fires were caused by cooking.
Stay Safe on Thanksgiving
Cooking and Burn Safety—Remember to stand by your pan and stay in the kitchen when cooking. The best way to respond to a stove top fire is to put a lid on it and turn off the heat.
Candle Fire Safety—Burn candles inside a one foot circle of safety free of anything that can burn.
Smoke and CO Alarms—Make sure all smoke and CO alarms are working.
