The Rhode Island Attorney General’s office has announced that a former resident of North Attleborough has been indicted in the 2010 murder of Zachary Marshall in Providence.
Jason Lopes, 33, is alleged to have stabbed Marshall to death outside a bar on Peck Street in Providence in the early morning of Dec. 18, 2010, according to the AG’s office. Lopes was arrested this week in Garland, Texas, after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He is in custody in Texas, awaiting extradition back to Rhode Island.
Providence Chief of Police Col. Hugh T. Clements said in a statement that he was pleased with the outcome of the case and that the Providence Police Detectives would continue to investigate these cases to bring the offenders to justice.
“Through their investigation into this cold case, detectives were successfully able to locate the whereabouts of Lopes and alert the local authorities to apprehend him,” said Clements. “I thank the Attorney General’s Office for their partnership and assistance leading to this indictment.”
Steven Pare, Providence Commissioner of Public Safety, said that recent developments were made in the investigation, led by PPD Detective Angelo A’Vant, that uncovered new evidence that was brought to the Attorney General’s Office, which led to the indictment.
“Providence Police will continue going forward in their efforts in solving cold cases such as this,” said Pare.
