The town of North Attleborough and North Attleborough Fire Department are recognizing Firefighter/EMT John “Coop” Cooper as he retires following 36 years of dedicated service to the department and community.
Cooper worked his final shift on Monday, Aug. 31. In addition to his service with the NAFD, Cooper has served as a member of FEMA Massachusetts Task Force 1 Urban Search and Rescue Team, specializing in communications and responding to natural disasters and emergencies across the country.
“Being a firefighter/EMT is more than a job. It requires courage, discipline, compassion, teamwork and a willingness to put others before yourself,” Fire Chief Christopher Coleman said. “Coop, you’ve demonstrated these qualities whether you were putting on your gear, riding on the ambulance or serving with Massachusetts Task Force 1 and responding across the nation to help people. You’ve made a difference in people’s lives, often on their worst days.”
During a gathering at Fire Department headquarters recognizing his final shift, Cooper reflected on what it means to leave the profession after more than three decades.
“It’s bittersweet,” Cooper said. “For 36 years, I’ve been able to show up when people simply ask for help. They need someone to get there and make it better for them. It’s hard to let go of something like that, but they say you know when it’s time. I’m going to miss it.”
Cooper was also presented with certificates recognizing his years of service from the Town Council, state Sen. Paul Feeney, D-Foxboro, and state Rep. Adam Scanlon, D-North Attleborough.
