Simmons receives endorsement from Gov. Baker

Town Councilor John Simmons has received a number of endorsements in his bid for State Representative—and now he can count Gov. Charlie Baker among his supporters.

Simmons, running as a Republican, received the notification earlier this week and had heard some time back that it may happen. Simmons is running against Democrat Adam Scanlon for the 14th Bristol District state representative seat, currently held by Betty Poirier. Earlier this year, Poirier announced she would not run for re-election after more than 20 years.

I was honored,” said Simmons on Friday. “Honored and humbled.”

In a written statement, Baker said that Simmons has been a powerful advocate for the communities in the 14th Bristol District.

John’s lengthy record of community service, including his work on Representative Town Meeting, the Election Commission, and Town Council, speaks volumes to his dedication and experience,” wrote Baker. “Residents have consistently trusted John to provide a rational, balanced approach to local government.”

Simmons said that Baker wants balance in the State House, which can only happen if the people elect more Republicans that can take an even approach. With only a few weeks before the Nov. 3 election, he said that every day is filled with anticipation. In the days to come he plans to knock on doors, hold signs, meet with the people, and find any way to get his message out.

Interest in the election has varied with the people Simmons has met. He’s gotten a positive response from those he’s spoken with, even if they were unaware of the race for state representative or don’t often vote. He said the race against Scanlon has been a civil one, and must be, given that both serve on the council.

Neither of us wants to hurt North Attleborough,” he said. “Nobody is served if we can’t have a calm discussion of ideas.”
