Athlete Profile—Owen Harding

By Max Bowen-max.bowen@northstarreporter.com

As a football and baseball player, North Attleborough High School student Owen Harding said time management has been one of the most important skills he’s learned over the years. Harding is the November Student Athlete of the month.

How did you get into sports?

Both my parents played sports, so they had an influence on that. Ever since I was a little kid I’ve been playing baseball since I was 5. I started football in second grade, so I just kept with it all these years. It’s been a very good part of my life and I enjoyed it, so I stayed with it.

Has it been a help to you academically?

I need to have good time management skills, so especially with a busy practice schedule I need to set aside a certain time to do my homework and study, as well as go to practice.

What are some of the best parts about being an athlete?

It gives you connections. You automatically have some friends as your teammates. It’s not as stressful to have to find friends if you have your own group there.

Is there a big difference in training between football and baseball?

I’d say football is a little more intense, especially at the beginning of the school year, you got to go train throughout the entire summer. There’s a good workout program that we have to go through and then once that ends, baseball is a lot more relaxed.

What’s next for you?

I’m looking to go to college. I’ve just sent my applications out. My schools are Northeastern, UMass Amherst, Holy Cross, Qunnipiac. I want to study marketing and I want to focus on the pharmaceutical industry. I feel like it’s a good place to stop. I’ll still be around sports, maybe coach.
