Staff Report

A controversial debt exclusion of Proposition 2 1/2 to fund a new North Attleborough High School was passed in Tuesday’s Special Town Election.

Unofficial results show the debt exclusion passed with 3,981 in favor and 2,459 against, winning by a margin of 1,532 votes. Results show that 6,464 of the town’s 24,451 registered voters made it to the polls, roughly a quarter of the registered voters.

The debt exclusion called for the town to fund $180,861,098 of the $287,861,098 that the new school is estimated to cost. This will be paid off through a 30-year bond, which will increase property taxes by around $600-$1,000 a year for the life of the bond, depending on home assessments. The remaining $107 million will be reimbursed by the Massachusetts School Building Authority.
