The Downtown Associates of North Attleborough and Department of Parks and Recreation will host the annual Halloween in the Park celebration on Sunday, Oct. 18,

The event will run from 1 to 3:30 pm at Veterans Park, in front of town hall. Rain date is Oct. 26, same time, same place. Briggs Nursery is sponsoring the event.

Halloween in the Park will feature plenty of games, contests, and treats like cotton candy, popcorn and bags of candy for kids. Maureen Merigold, co-chair of the event, said the vendors who participate will entertain kids with free games and bowls of candy, stickers and other prizes at their tables. A Halloween DJ will be on hand for any kids, parents or families who feel like dancing.

The main events kick off at 2 p.m. with the pumpkin judging contest.

“Anybody can bring a pumpkin from home. It doesn’t have to be carved, any size will do,” said Merigold adding decorated pumpkins always compete. Prizes are awarded for most creative and best in show.

At 3 p.m. all witches, goblins, princesses and ghosts will march around the park in the costume parade. Merigold said about 20 trophies will be awarded in different categories, such as the scariest and most original, and according to different age groups.

Despite the holiday’s spooky reputation, the focus of Halloween in the Park is more about the fun.

“It’s a small-town family event,” said Merigold.
