Katherine Owens celebrated her 100th birthday over the weekend of Feb. 20 with a parade of family and local first responders. Arranged by her granddaughter Colleen Deschenes of North Attleborough, four generations were in attendance, with Foxboro Police and Fire leading the way.
All bundled up in layers of blankets, Katherine sat on the front porch of the Doolittle Home in Foxboro and watched as her family members—some of whom came from as far away as Idaho—drove by beeping their horns and waving.
Katherine was born on Feb. 22, 1921, in Boston, the eldest of three children. She was a graduate of the Jeremiah Burke High School Class of 1938 and went on to become a purchaser for Sears Roebuck. Shortly after she met the love of her life, Thomas Owens, who would soon be deployed overseas. Upon his arrival home they were married on Aug. 24, 1946. They made their home in Weymouth where they raised four children, vacationing at their summer home in Dennisport every summer.
Katherine has nine grandchildren, 18—soon to be 19—great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild on the way.
