Two people were hospitalized following a crash involving a pedestrian and a motorcycle on Route 1, according to information provided by the town.

North Attleborough Police and Fire, along with regional mutual aid partners, responded to a report of a crash involving a pedestrian and motorcyclist on Route 1 near Stop & Shop the evening of Tuesday, Nov. 3. Two parties were transported, one by ambulance and another by medical helicopter, to Rhode Island Hospital.

The accident remains under investigation by local and state authorities.

Throughout the incident, North Attleborough dispatchers, police officers, firefighter/paramedics and mutual aid partners worked to provide immediate lifesaving care, according to the town. North Attleborough first responders provided pre-arrival instructions, coordinating emergency personnel and mutual aid resources and arranging for a medical helicopter.

NAPD officers immediately began administering care until firefighter/paramedics arrived and assumed care.

Recognizing the severity of the injuries, the NAFD’s shift commander requested assistance from the Mansfield Fire Department Whole Blood Unit, a regional emergency medical resource staffed by specially trained firefighter/paramedics capable of administering lifesaving whole blood in the field.

“After numerous activations of our Regional Field Transfusion Unit since its launch in July, this incident marks the first time our team has administered whole blood to a critically injured patient in the field. This is a significant milestone for our program and reinforces why we worked so hard to bring this life-saving capability to Mansfield and our surrounding communities,” said Mansfield Fire Chief Justin Desrosiers in a statement. “I commend Chief Coleman and all of the North Attleborough firefighters, paramedics, Boston Medflight, and other emergency responders involved in this incident, along with our Mansfield Field Transfusion Unit members, for their professionalism, teamwork, and commitment to providing the highest level of care to the patient. This incident demonstrates the importance of regional cooperation and what we can accomplish when departments work together.”

After being stabilized, one patient was transported to a designated landing zone, where North Attleborough firefighter/paramedics and Boston MedFlight critical care paramedics and nurses continued providing advanced life support. The patient was then transported by medical helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital. A second patient was transported by ground to Rhode Island Hospital as well.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic incident,” said North Attleborough Fire Chief Coleman. “I want to acknowledge the extraordinary efforts of our dispatchers, police officers, firefighter/paramedics and mutual aid partners, who worked together under incredibly difficult circumstances to provide the best possible emergency care. Every individual involved demonstrated tremendous professionalism, compassion and dedication.”
