Staff Report

Bridge repair work is now being conducted by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) along Route 1 (Washington Street), beneath Interstate 295.

The project began on Oct. 18, and is expected to continue through Friday, Dec. 18, weather permitting. Work will involve repairs to the bridge’s supporting structures and will be conducted during overnight hours, Sunday through Thursday, from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m., according to information from the town.

Temporary lane closures along Route 1 may be necessary to accommodate construction activities, however, at least one travel lane in each direction will remain open throughout the work and all Interstate 295 ramps will remain accessible.

Police details will be present during construction to assist with traffic management and maintain safe conditions for motorists and construction crews, according to the town’s announcement.

Motorists traveling through the area during overnight hours are encouraged to exercise caution, follow posted traffic controls and allow additional travel time.

The project will be performed by MIG Corporation, Inc., under the direction of MassDOT.

As this is a state-managed project, residents with questions or concerns regarding construction activities should contact MassDOT’s District 5 Construction Office at 857-368-5104.

The town has another bridge replacement project, for the Mendon Road bridge over the Abbott Run River, slated to begin in autumn 2028. This bridge is labeled “structurally deficient,” meaning some parts are worn out and do not meet today’s standards. While the bridge is not unsafe, it does need major repairs or a full replacement to stay safe and reliable in the future.

MassDOT plans to completely replace the bridge and upgrade the nearby roadway. The project will cover about 800 feet of Mendon Road, starting roughly 250 feet north of Depot Street and continuing south past the bridge toward Chase Street.
