Fire Chief Christopher Coleman would like to remind community members to check their carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke alarms.

Smoke alarms need to be replaced after 10 years, and carbon monoxide alarms need to be replaced after 5, 7, or 10 years, depending on the make and model. The Fire Department recommends that residents replace their alarms if they’re outdated or lack a date.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) offer the following safety tips:

  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms monthly to make sure they are working. CPSC recommends installing smoke alarms on every level of the home, in each bedroom, and in outside sleeping areas. CO alarms should be installed on each level of the home and outside sleeping areas.
  • If the CO alarm sounds, immediately move to a fresh-air location, such as outdoors or to an open window or door. Make sure everyone inside the home is accounted for. Call for help from a fresh-air location and stay there until emergency personnel arrive.
  • Batteries in alarms should be replaced at least once each year, unless the alarms use sealed 10-year batteries. Replace the smoke alarm if it is more than 10 years old. If the alarm chirps, indicating a low battery, replace the entire smoke alarm right away.
  • Have a fire escape plan and ensure there are two ways out of each room, with a clear path to the outside from each exit. Once out, stay out of the house.
