Director & Public Health Nurse Anne Marie Fleming shares information to help community members stay healthy and prevent the spread of influenza.

As of Jan. 3, 69 flu cases have been reported in North Attleborough since Dec. 1.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, influenza (“flu”) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. Flu can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death.

Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny/stuffy nose, muscle/body aches, headaches, fatigue and more. While most people recover from the flu, some may develop complications that can be life-threatening as a result of the flu.

To prevent the spread of germs, community members are encouraged to:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • If you are sick, stay home for at least 24 hours until both of the following conditions are met: your symptoms are improving overall, and you have not had a fever.
  • Cover nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of the tissue in the trash after use.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water.
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth. Germs spread this way.

The best way to reduce risk from seasonal flu and its potentially serious complications is to get a flu vaccine every year.

Free flu shots are available to all Massachusetts residents at no cost on Mondays and Thursdays at the North Attleborough Health Department, located at 43 S. Washington St. The Health Department will allow walk-ins on these days between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.

If these dates and times do not work, community members can schedule appointments by calling 508-699-0100 ext. 2560 or emailing amfleming@nattleboro.com.

Vaccines are available to adults and children six months and older. There is a limited supply of high-dose flu shots available for community members 65 years old and older. These are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Community members must fill out a Flu Form, which can be found on the Board of Health’s website. Those wishing to receive a shot are asked to bring their insurance card with them. For those who do not have an insurance card or coverage, no billing will be processed.

Anyone with questions should contact the Health Department at 508-699-0100 Ext. 2560.
