Derek Smith, a 2001 graduate of North Attleborough High School, has been removed from his position as president of North Attleborough Youth Basketball after facing accusations of misusing funds by the organization’s board of directors.
According to School Superintendent John Antonucci, Smith, who also served as head coach of the boys varsity basketball team at NAHS since 2023, is no longer employed by North Attleborough Public Schools.
Attempts to reach Smith for comment were not immediately successful.
In an email sent to parents of NAYB players, the board of directors cited a desire to be honest and transparent with the parents and coaches of its program before sharing the news that Smith is no longer a part of the organization.
The statement read: “Earlier this month, the NAYB board determined that there was a potential misuse of NAYB funds involving Derek Smith and voted unanimously to remove him as board president. In addition, the NAYB board has filed a police report with our local law enforcement and an investigation is ongoing. Due to this being an active investigation, the board will have no further comments at this time.”
The North Attleborough Police Department confirmed to the North Star Reporter that a report on this matter has been filed, but is not a public record at this time due to being an ongoing investigation.
In the interim, the NAYB board voted to elect Chris Schlick to serve as president and Pat Beith as vice president.
NAHS Athletic Director Nick Schlierf also provided a statement expressing appreciation for Smith’s dedication to the basketball program for the past two seasons, but stated he will not be returning as head coach for the upcoming season. According to Schlierf, information about the search for a new varsity coach and boys program leader will be available in the future.
