North Attleborough is mourning the loss of Austin Dean, a 20-year-old graduate of North Attleborough High School (NAHS) and a member of the Class of 2023, as authorities investigate the car crash that claimed his life.
Dean’s passing has deeply impacted the NAHS community, where he was remembered as a well-liked classmate and a leader among his peers. NAHS Principal Peter Haviland, in a letter sent to parents following the accident, reflected on Dean’s contributions, saying:
“It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of Austin Dean, a member of the Class of 2023. Austin was a valued part of our school community. He was a well-liked classmate, student, wrestling captain, and football player, and his loss is deeply felt by all who knew him…Let us honor Austin’s memory by showing kindness and compassion to one another in the days ahead.”
Haviland emphasized the importance of kindness and support during this time, encouraging students and families to access counseling resources.
According to the Smithfield Police Department, the crash occurred on Dec. 16 around 5:35 p.m. in Smithfield, Rhode Island and involved two vehicles. Dean sustained critical injuries and was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving.
The driver of the second vehicle and their juvenile passenger were also injured and taken to Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital, respectively, for treatment.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation, with authorities working to determine any contributing factors.
As the investigation into the crash continues, the North Attleborough community remembers Austin Dean for his leadership, kindness, and athleticism, which left a lasting impression on his teammates and peers.
