This year, Bob Bernier’s Barbershop in North Attleborough, which features a collage of memories, celebrated a half century of serving the community.

Since opening its doors on April 14, 1974, on North Washington Street, Bernier’s shop has remained in the same location, becoming a cherished institution for loyal customers and new visitors alike.

For Bernier, barbering wasn’t just a career, but a calling. Growing up in North Attleborough, he knew as early as first grade that he wanted to cut hair. After enrolling in barber school in 1967, he enlisted in the Navy in 1968, where he continued honing his craft by cutting his comrades’ hair.

Over the years, Bernier has kept his business a solo endeavor, never hiring employees.

“This is the only job I’ve ever had,” Bernier said. “As I’ve told my customers, the day I retire, I’ll just know it’s time.”

His shop is a blend of nostalgia and community, decorated with mementos from his travels and thoughtful gifts from loyal customers. Perhaps the most touching feature is Bernier’s “wall of honor,” where he lovingly displays obituary clippings of customers who have passed away.

Bernier’s charm lies in his personable approach. His motto, “I may not be the fastest barber in the world, but I am the best,” reflects his dedication to quality over speed. Conversations in the shop are lively, with one major rule: no discussion of politics or religion.

“Everything else is on the table,” Bernier said with a laugh.

Though he loves to travel, Bernier remains committed to the craft and the people who’ve supported him for five decades.

“I like all my customers,” he shared.

For those who sit in his chair, it’s more than a haircut—it’s a glimpse into a legacy built on hard work, community, and a passion that has stood the test of time.
