During this year’s Fire Prevention Week, the North Attleborough Fire Department hosted an open house to educate the community on fire safety.
Fire Prevention Week is a national event held annually, aimed at raising awareness about fire safety and prevention. This year’s open house featured hands-on activities designed to engage young attendees while teaching essential safety practices.
Families were treated to hot dogs and chips as kids explored the fire engines. They also had an opportunity to use a fire hose to douse prop flames, giving them a sense of how firefighters work in real emergencies.
In addition to the interactive exhibits, there were stands with fire safety educational materials for families to take home. Many of the materials are also used by the department’s safety education team, which regularly visits North Attleborough public schools to reinforce key fire prevention tips.
Police Chief Richard McQuade emphasized the importance of these initiatives, stating, “Fire prevention week is important to educate the public and kids to set up exit plans, how to stay low, crawl under the smoke…maintaining safety year round.”
When asked about the significance of teaching children fire safety, McQuade explained, “As you get older, you have a foundation of knowledge and can build on that…and if something happens to your house, how to get out quickly.”

By focusing on educating children and providing hands-on experiences, the event helped instill a foundation of safety knowledge that can last a lifetime.
