On May 4,the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) will be joining in the celebration of International Firefighters’ Day which began on May 4, 1999, after the deaths of five Australian firefighters in a wildland fire. Since that time, International Firefighters’ day is held every May 4 to recognize the work and sacrifice of firefighters across the globe in keeping their communities safe.
In early April, the department organized care packages for the town’s senior citizens. Many heartfelt letters of thanks were sent, including the poem below. Firefighters, police officers, and medical professionals are all on the front lines of this pandemic, and it’s important to thank them for their service in this difficult times.
Today the Senior Center called
They said they had a mask.
And since I didn’t have one
‘Twas more than I could ask.
Donated by the fireman,
Firewomen if there is
I thought it was a nice thing
Outside of town’s fire biz.
But when I went to get it,
Was floored, I must say.
The presents you included,
It really made my day!
So thank you for the goodies,
And for your service too.
I have to say a million times
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I thought there would be one mask,
Instead the count was two.
A roll of toilet paper,
You know what that can do.
Tomato soup came in a can
The crackers were the Ritz
They go together anyway
It makes a luncheon blitz.
An insulated lunch bag,
And with it came some soap.
A flashlight with some batteries
Would even please the Pope.
Two keyrings and two sticky notes
Two pads came with two pens.
We use them every day because
We use them in the tens.
The slipper sox are awesome
The teabag is just right
The oatmeal pack for any day
Is breakfast out of sight.
Whoever filled the bags up,
My heart goes out to you.
And I will tell you once again,
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
