Candidate Profile: Donald Cerrone for Town Council

Please list any experience on other boards, committees or organizations.

Business owner – Cerrone Builders & Developers. Current member, Board of Public Works , former Planning Board member, former Martin School Building Committee and N.A. Middle School Building Committee member.

Why are you running for this position?

With the flurry of challenges that our community is facing, I feel the need to get involved and lend my expertise to assist the town in preserving the quality of life for our residents and future generations. I also think we need to encourage more community engagement in local government, in order to acquire a better understanding of the community’s needs and priorities, and enable us to make more equitable and sustainable public decisions that would improve the overall livability of the community as a whole.

If elected, what issues would you like to focus on?

Economic growth: I believe that economic growth contributes to a more vibrant and thriving community. I support sustainable economic growth that would boost the local economy, without compromising the unique things that make the town a great place to live.

School facilities: School building deficiencies negatively impact the school community. If we fail to address school building deficiencies or invest in the physical infrastructure of our educational system, then our return on other investments will be diminished as well. Quality school buildings facilitate quality education, and also attract families and businesses to the community, boosting the local economy.

What sets you apart from other candidates?

As lifelong residents of North Attleborough, my wife and I have raised our three children here, who are now raising their families here as well. With three generations of family that call North Attleborough home, I have a deep-rooted and genuine concern for the welfare of this town and its residents. I have been a local business owner for the past 46 years, and have given over 32 years of service to the town, serving on various boards and committees.

What are some areas that the town has improved upon and what, in your opinion, remains to be done?

The town’s transition to online permitting in 2017 was a positive step in consolidating and improving the permitting process. It could also be a useful tool in streamlining and expediting the processes and regulations necessary to facilitate business development and economic growth for the town. Through collaboration with the town planner, DANA, Chamber of Commerce, businesses and residents, measures could be taken to help strengthen and revive the downtown area, repurpose the Emerald Square Mall, and initiate improvements to the infrastructure of the downtown and Route 1 corridor, which could help enhance the town’s attractiveness to businesses and visitors.

Being part of a board requires one to be a team player. Does your background lend you to working well in this environment?

I’ve had many years of experience serving on various boards and committees, such as Planning Board (18 years), Board of Public Works (14 years), Martin School Building Committee, and N.A. Middle School Building Committee. As a long-term resident and local business owner, I have witnessed the town’s growth and challenges, as well as the impacts. All of these experiences combined have not only provided me with a clear understanding of the demands and inner workings of town government, but have also given me a unique insight that would bode well for this position.
