Mike Babul, a standout athlete from North Attleborough High School and boys varsity basketball head coach at Thayer Academy, passed away unexpectedly on Monday at the age of 47.
According to a statement from Thayer Academy, Babul died while traveling during the holiday break.
According to the New England Recruiting Report, Babul’s athletic career began in North Attleborough, Massachusetts, where he excelled under coach Don Johnson. As a junior, he averaged 22.3 points and 12 rebounds per game, and as a senior, he averaged 20.1 points and 8.4 rebounds. His achievements included the 1995-96 Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year award and being named a Parade All-American.
Thayer Academy released a statement mourning Babul’s death:
“In his brief time with the Thayer community, Coach Babul had a powerful impact on the basketball program. We are truly grateful for Coach Babul’s incredible work and the care he has shown for our student-athletes. Coach Babul will be deeply missed. Our hearts go out to Coach Babul’s family, friends, and the wider basketball community who are mourning this tragic loss.”
Babul led the team to its first winning record in several years with 13 victories. This season, the team had a 5-1 record under his leadership. Thayer Academy’s athletic department website highlights that he coached over 75 players who later played professional basketball.
Mike Babul’s passing leaves a profound space in the North Attleborough and Thayer Academy communities, as well as in the larger basketball world. His legacy as a gifted athlete, dedicated coach, and impactful mentor will be remembered and cherished by those who knew him.
