Fire Department rescinds temporary closure of Emerald Square Mall

The North Attleboro Fire Department has lifted its temporary closure of the Emerald Square Mall, allowing the mall to reopen to the public today, according to Fire Chief Christopher Coleman.

At approximately 9:30 a.m., the fire department met with local inspectors and mall management to conduct a walkthrough of the mall following its closure due to a water leak on Sunday, Feb. 16, according to a statement issued by the town Monday morning.

During the meeting, mall management presented several mitigation measures to town officials and outlined future plans to address water leaks.

With no threat to public safety, Coleman lifted the temporary closure, and the mall is expected to operate during its normal business hours today.

The temporary closure was enacted after the Fire Department received notification of a fire alarm activation on Sunday, Feb. 16, at approximately 1:30 p.m. When firefighters arrived at the Emerald Square Mall, they discovered that the alarm had been triggered by water leaking through a detector.

During the initial investigation, crews identified several areas throughout the mall where water was leaking from the roof, affecting lighting fixtures and the men’s and women’s restrooms on the third floor. It is believed that the leaks were caused by inclement weather, including snow and ice accumulation on the roof.

These leaks are currently being addressed by mall management and its roofing company.

For any inquiries regarding the status of stores or other impacts to the mall, please contact mall management.
