The Town Council’s first meeting since July, held on Sept. 9, brought significant updates on the ongoing Ten Mile River flood mitigation efforts.
Two major projects are now underway to address the river’s longstanding flooding issues.
The first project, funded by a FEMA Pre-Disaster Mitigation Grant awarded in 2022, aims to develop a comprehensive, long-term plan to reduce flooding along a key segment of the Ten Mile River.
This initiative will revisit previous assessments and adapt strategies to account for climate change. This may include projects such as building bioswales or restoring natural flood storage areas.
The second project focuses on dredging heavily-sedimented areas of the river. Engineers are working on drafting plans in compliance with the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act, with bidding expected to open next summer.
Both initiatives could reduce flood damage and improve habitat and wetland ecosystems. Further, a town conservation agent is working to balance necessary brush clearing with environmental preservation.
While they estimate these projects will take several years to complete, the council emphasized the importance of these efforts.
As the meeting concluded, it was clear that the 10-Mile River remains a top priority for the town, with these projects promising to significantly impact flood control and environmental conservation in the coming years.
