North Attleborough resident laces up for Falmouth Road Race

On Aug. 18, Kaitlin Geagan of North Attleborough will run in the Falmouth Road Race to raise money and awareness for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod & the Islands, part of the state’s leading one-to-one mentoring program for youth.

“I’m running the Falmouth Road Race for my little and all the people who can’t run because of illness or disability,” said Geagan, one of 29 Falmouth Road Race runners hitting the pavement and fundraising for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod & the Islands this year. “When I ran last year, I thought of my dad and my little and how proud they would be of me. Along with the cheering on the sidelines, that kept me going. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts is important to expose children to activities they might not be able to enjoy with their families. Others should get involved because it’s rewarding knowing you are making a difference in someone’s life.”

Geagan is a former two-time youth volunteer mentor. As a female scientist, she became a Big to inspire young girls to develop an interest in science and build confidence in themselves. She and her most recent Little were matched for over a year before her mentee moved to Florida, and Geagan visited her last October. The duo plans to stay in touch and enjoy museums and planetarium tours together in the future.

Geagan is running the Falmouth Road Race for her Little, as well as her father, who passed away from leukemia. Her goal is to raise $1,250 for youth mentorship.

“The impact of mentoring extends far beyond the young person receiving support,” said JR Mell, Regional Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod & the Islands. “It helps to positively impact families and our Cape & Islands communities at large. We are grateful to individuals, like Kaitlin, who are finding creative ways to further our mission on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket to ensure our adult mentors remain a constant and accessible resource for youth. We need our community’s continued support to serve as many youth and families as possible throughout the region.”
